ADHD Diagnosis Inquiries and Special Assessment Pathway

Our specialists provide comprehensive assessment and treatment services for individuals with suspected ADHD, while always adhering to conventional medical processes. We recognise the complex nature of the ADHD diagnosis in modern psychiatry, amid real lives led in our rapidly evolving world. We understand that ADHD is a high-prevalence neurodevelopmental disorder of childhood that may persist into adulthood, while often presenting with comorbid difficulties and medical complexity. However, we acknowledge the recent decade’s surge in the adult ADHD diagnosis and the potential for misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment and worsening health outcomes.

Our specialists employ a thorough clinical and psychometric evaluation using the Creyos Diagnostic System to identify cognitive and activity-related symptoms, including anxiety, mood disorders, and varied behavioral temperaments. We follow expert guidelines and contemporary scientific evidence to ensure accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatments. While acknowledging the potential benefits of stimulant medications, we prescribe them cautiously, maintaining an ongoing specialist care relationship and being mindful of the risks of medication misuse and diversion.

The Seneca Clinic psychiatrists are committed to differentiating ADHD from other significant mental health conditions with similar symptoms. Our goal is to address the primary and comorbid diagnoses our patients present with, rather than simply meeting subjective requests for an ADHD diagnosis. We provide effective, evidence-based care that considers the holistic needs of each individual, their family, and the broader community. We believe that the complex diagnosis and care of ADHD require specialist psychiatric and psychological expertise and should not be devolved to non-experts.

In adults, following a thorough assessment involving clinical interviews and psychometric evaluations, we address the varied experiences of attentional disorders, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Treatment may include various medications and engagement with a specialist therapist for cognitive behavioral therapy and coaching in effective coping skills and self-care. Local organizations, such as the NZ ADHD Association, can also offer valuable support to individuals and their families.

If you suspect you have undiagnosed ADHD, we encourage you to complete an ADHD screening tool and then discuss the results with your GP to determine if a specialist referral is indicated. We strive to provide equitable access to our services, ensuring accurate and effective diagnosis and treatment. Our approach follows expert guidelines and contemporary scientific evidence, with a holistic perspective.

Stimulant medications are prescribed only within evidence-based guidelines, with all necessary precautions to ensure patient and community safety. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and qualified therapists play key roles in delivering ADHD services, utilizing evidence-based knowledge and skills in diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care for those experiencing ADHD.
